Welcome to our issue “Have you been to the mall lately?” where we scour different malls to find stores that have clothing for women who are 50 +!!
This week we look near home at Towson Mall in Towson, Maryland, USA.
Well it is safe to say that I was really out shopping for myself. I start with the first floor of the mall and decide to attack it floor by floor in my quest.
I find myself walking past many shops with their mannequins flaunting clothes that make me wish I were 30 years younger!! This does not seem to be working very well. Finally, after walking past almost 20 stores, I find one which seems a bit more inviting and welcoming, Nordstrom Rack.
I worked for Nordstrom for a short period of time and had familiarized myself with the different designers and their signature lines. Although the store catered to a woman like me and/or clothing that appealed to my style of dress, it can be a bit expensive. Nordstrom Rack however, has similar designer wear for less than designer prices. I have at many times slipped away during my lunch hour to the Rack to indulge in “designer wear” that suited me.
At times, I could afford to shop upstairs at Nordstrom using my employee discount. But that’s another story for another time.
Speaking of working in Nordstrom, I bump into an old friend who is doing the exact same thing. She was shopping in the Rack for some designer flats. Working on the sales floor in heels is only good for about the first four hours of your shift. We have a conversation and I tell her I’m searching to find stores in the mall that cater to the 50plus woman. She’s also a 50plus woman and after some discussion she says to me “Good Luck with finding stores, but you won’t find many here”. To confirm my theory, she proceeds to tell me that on this level there is only one choice, Nordstrom Rack.
She says that shopping as a 50plus woman has become challenging for her as well. I was surprised that would be so seeing that she worked for Nordstrom’s, surely it had to be easier for her. She goes on to tell me that since the economy has been bad she no longer has the luxury of shopping where she works and even fewer customers shop at Nordstrom.
We make some more small talk while I also curiously look around to see if there are any other 50plus women in the Rack. And sure enough I see a sizeable amount of women to confirm that Nordstrom Rack may indeed make it to our list of shops for the 50plus woman. And it looks like that just about summarizes shopping on the first floor of Towson mall as well.
Stay tuned as we continue in our quest in “Have You Been to the Mall Lately” …
