Age has nothing to do with it

“50 plus means subdued almost boring dressing”.
“Mature women have to lose weight to look good”
We say that it is a myth and is the first of many fashion myths when it comes to dressing for older mature women.

I can think of many but am picking 5 of my favourites in no particular order and how wrong we are about them.
1)   Loose and shapeless clothes are the most ideal as they will hide the faults in your figure.
This cannot be further from the truth. Shapeless garments only emphasize rather than hide. Fine simple lines and tailored lines lead the eye to see the transition from waist to hip instead of it all having one shape. Think tailored at all times.
A loose styled dress like a kaftan should always be cinched at the waist . Avoid blouses or tops that cut at the hip level if you have a broad hip. Wear them above or below the hip line.
2)   Horizontal stripes will make your frame look broader and is a no no for older women cannot carry off stripes.
It’s a myth as well because an entire dress of horizontal stripes has a slimming effect. It’s a classic case of optical illusion. Pair a horizontal striped dress or blouse with a smart well cut jacket and people will notice that waist between the jacket lapels. The jacket should be shorter of longer never the same size as the blouse or dress.
3)   Two bright and deep tones cannot be combined together and would be considered unfashionable.
Again its all in the way you combine it. Bright deep tones can be beautifully combined to bring out your best features individually above and below the waist.
4)   Avoid bright coloured prints if you have a broad frame.
You can carry bright colours as well as anyone. Just make sure there are lots of plain ground in between to create a good balance or pair it with an angular jacket to cut the monotony.
5 ) My accessories should always match my dress or be in the same colour palette.
Not necessarily and does not have to be in the same family. You can dress up a monotone outfit with a contrasting accessory to give it a pop while still blending beautifully with the concept.
It is not necessary to change much just because you have grown older or put on some weight. There are many ways to still feel beautiful and attractive. The mature woman grows beautiful and complete on the inside while she becomes sophisticated on the outside.

It may be time for the babydoll dresses and micro-minis to become hand downs to your younger daughters, granddaughters or neices but it is not the end of minis altogether.

Your best features can still attract attention, it just needs to be toned down and played with creatively to match your work, lifestyle and social circle.

Age has not much to do with it.
