Sally DiMarco

This month we profile a local Baltimore, Maryland woman in fashion, Ms. Sally DiMarco. Our creative designer, Carla Armstrong had the pleasure of traveling to Italy in 2010, with Sally and her former class at Baltimore City Community College.

For the past thirty-eight years, I have earned a highly respectable reputation in the fashion industry as the former chief fashion designer of fur-lined coat collections for names such as Chanel, Dior, and St Laurent. Within the education system, I served as the Coordinator for the Fashion Design Program at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) from 1979 until my retirement in 2010. As an Associate Professor at BCCC, I taught courses in Clothing Construction, Costume, Draping, Tailoring, and Textiles.

I received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree in Fashion Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and a Masters Degree in Higher Education from the Johns Hopkins University. Keeping in step with changes in the education field, I pursued postgraduate training in art, education, and other fashion-related subjects at various institutions of higher learning.

During my tenure at BCCC I organized and led annual tours to various European fashion centers. My most recent 2010 trip to Italy included visits to the Museo Didattico della Seta (Silk Museum) in the city of Como, the Trussardi Fashion House in Milan, and the Instituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Venice. Over the years I collected numerous awards and recognitions for excellence in teaching. The most notable was the prestigious American Textile Manufacturer’s Institute Award for Teaching Excellence and Innovative Curriculum Design.

In the past, I was a frequent lecturer at G Street Fabrics located in Rockville, Maryland, Adjunct Instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Designer-in-Residence at the University of Southwest Missouri, Human Ecology Department, and Adjunct Assistant Professor at Delaware State University (DSU), Apparel and Textiles Program. I am also the author of,
Draping Basics, a recently published textbook by Fairchild Publications.

I am a member of several professional organizations and boards such as the Fashion Group International, International Textile and Apparel Association, BCCC’s Fashion Design Program Advisory Committee, and Morgan State University’s Human Ecology Advisory Committee. Future plans include traveling to promote my book and conducting fashion-related workshops for the educational and private sector.
